The Dirty Dozen
The Dirty Dozen
You’ve probably heard the saying, “you are what you eat” — but have you ever thought about “you are what you put on”?
Let me explain.

One of the simplest ways to start creating a low-tox home is by becoming aware of what ingredients to avoid. There’s a list called The Dirty Dozen — twelve ingredients that are best to steer clear of when choosing everyday products for your home and body.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
1. BHA & BHT – Used as preservatives in cosmetics; known endocrine disruptors and possible carcinogens.
2. Coal Tar Dyes – Contain heavy metals and are linked to cancer; often found in lipsticks, hair dyes, and even processed foods.
3. DEA-related ingredients – Found in foamy products like shampoos and moisturizers; linked to cancer.
4. Dibutyl Phthalates (DBP) – Endocrine disruptor and reproductive toxicant; commonly in nail care products.
5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – Used to extend shelf life but are known carcinogens, they are used in a variety of cosmetics as preservatives.
6. Parabens – Endocrine disruptors that may interfere with male hormones; used as preservatives in cosmetics.
7. Fragrance/Parfum – A hidden mix of chemicals that can cause allergies, hormone disruption, and sensitivities (companies don’t have to list the ingredients because of “trade secrets”).
8. PEG Compounds – Can be contaminated with carcinogenic 1,4-dioxane; often used as cream bases.
9. Petrolatum – A petroleum byproduct linked to cancer; found in lip balms and hair products.
10. Siloxanes – Used to smooth and soften, but can disrupt hormones and affect fertility.
11. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – A foaming agent that can be contaminated with carcinogens.
12. Triclosan – Linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance; often found in antibacterial soaps and toothpaste.
So what’s the big deal with Endocrine Disruptors?
These are chemicals that mess with your hormones — they can mimic, block, or change how your body naturally works. The Environmental Working Group explains that they can do everything from altering hormone production to accumulating in the organs that produce them.
Small changes truly make a big difference. The more we know, the more empowered we are to make better choices for ourselves and our families

So Now You Know… What’s Next? 💫
Now that you know about The Dirty Dozen — those sneaky ingredients that love to hide in our everyday products — you might be wondering, “Okay… now what do I actually do with this info?”
Here’s where to start:
1. Don’t panic — just start small.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. When something runs out, replace it with a cleaner, safer option. One swap at a time truly adds up.
2. Read your labels.
Start flipping your bottles and checking ingredients — especially on products that stay on your skin (like lotions, deodorant, and makeup) or you use often (like cleaners and soaps).
3. Choose better.
Look for brands that are transparent with their ingredients and are free from parabens, synthetic fragrance, and sulfates. (I’ll share some of my go-tos soon!)
4. Focus on the spaces you use most.
Your bathroom, kitchen, and laundry are great starting points — these are where most toxins hide.
5. Give yourself grace.
This is a journey, not a race. Every little swap is a step toward a healthier home for you and your family.
You are the gatekeeper of what comes into your home — and with knowledge comes power
